Debate over breaches
ARTICLE (September 08, 2010): The debate on cuts in the embankments of the flooded Indus started when a breach developed in the Left Marginal Bank (LMB) near Taunsa barrage in the beginning of August. The water gushing out of this 6,000-foot wide breach turned Daira Din Pannah, Kot Addu, Sanwan and Gurmani into huge ponds while it inundated thousands of acres of cultivated land.

Defence Day 2010 thoughts
ARTICLE (September 08, 2010): Another Defence of Pakistan Day was celebrated with simplicity across the country on Monday - and the simplicity factor was duly stressed. It was programmed as simple this year because of the flood havoc that has hit hard and mercilessly over twenty million people. Therefore the media focus was conspicuously in low profile.

Religious vigilantes strike fear in Iraqi town
ARTICLE (September 08, 2010): Simply wearing jeans, listening to pop music or having too much fun in the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah now can elicit the wrath of self-appointed religious vigilantes. The Islamist vigilantes, wearing black hoods to conceal their identity, seize phones containing pop music or "immoral" pictures. They punish those wearing Western clothes.

Partly Facetious: Nawaz Sharif is being facetious
ARTICLE (September 08, 2010): "So what's the latest?"

Storm in a teacup, or more?
ARTICLE (September 07, 2010): Has the storm caused by MQM's invitation to the army to fix the flaws in state governance, and its modified stand demanding a change emulating the French Revolution, ended up in a teacup? MQM's critics, who blame it for doing nothing about land reforms (the reason for its call for a revolution) as part of the coalition regimes since 1988 without blaming themselves for their own criminal lapse in this regard, want us to believe so.

Spotlight: The conflicting images we project confuse friends and well-wishers!: Judiciary exhausts patience; begins to move decisively, at last!
ARTICLE (September 07, 2010): One wondered how long the game would go on. How long would the judiciary allow the progress of high profile cases, affecting important functionaries of the PPP government to be held hostage to the machinations of the Federal Law Ministry under Babar Awan, himself facing charges of various kinds?

First global congress for maritime environmental protection
ARTICLE (September 07, 2010): The north German city of Hamburg has been awarded the title "European Green Capital 2011" by the European Commission. Currently, this port city is giving an insight of how to combine sustainability with successful trading: at the global maritime environmental congress (GMEC), taking place on the 7th and 8th of September 2010.

Partly Facetious: Will somebody do an Altaf Hussain?
ARTICLE (September 07, 2010): "You remember that famous poem, The Ancient Mariner: water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink."

South Korean companies expected to invest $500 million: Mandviwalla
ARTICLE (September 06, 2010): On his return from South Korea and Japan, Minister of State and Chairman Board of Investment, Saleem H. Mandviwalla, tells Business Recorder's Islamabad staff reporters Wasim Iqbal, Zaheer Abbasi and Aisha Sadaf that South Korean companies are expected to invest $500 million in Pakistan. He also tells the panel Social Economic Zone Act will be introduced soon for the protection of foreign investor.

Inflation and how to eliminate it
ARTICLE (September 06, 2010): The PPP-led government has been struggling to reduce inflationary pressures ever-since it took over the reins of power. Statistics prior to the floods indicated that inflation was halved since March 2008, from over 25 percent in July of 2008 to less than 13 percent; however, it is going to go right back up to 25 percent, if not more, according to sources in the Ministry of Finance.
